In The Learning Society, Robert M. Hutchins proposed an ideal republic- the republic of learning. It is a common educational life in process. In this process, understanding plays an impor- tant role. Understanding, in Hutchins~s opinion, is not only what education aims to achieve, but the foundation for promoting the dialog between individuals. Eventually education for understanding will lead to a world community. This paper examines the aim, content, and approach of H utchins＇s education for understanding, and how understanding can promote the construction of a learning society.
